in moments. thank you. chris stirewalt, our digital edit editor, and let's start with hagel. you think that a democratic president picks even a moderate republican and granted, this is a guy who says he voted for obama twice, but you know, okay. so the best moderate of republicans, but still, he's a republican so you'd think he'd go through, but you think that this is actually controversial even according to liberal democrats? >> well, two categories here and the thing that wendell was talking about with pro-israel groups is a big deal. the things that he's said, he referred to the jewish lobby, which is a charged phrase when talking about groups in the united states that support israel, they're strong opposition among conservative pro-israel factions in the united states, but there's also among liberals misgiving and they want to hear from hagel, bowing and scraping and carden and others who are pro israel want to hear hagel say, i'm sorry, i shouldn't have. we may be on the verge of that great washington phrase "inartfully phrased", and then the second half, the fact that republicans

to see you, chris. former senator chuck hagel, of course, just nominated for secretary of defense, he would be part of this pull-out. he's a guy that was not in favor of the troop surge, has a controversial side to him in that regard. what do we expect from him? >> reporter: basically, michael, wasn't in favor of the surge in iraq, not quite so critical of the surge in afghanistan. it's a big difference. on the surge in iraq, he called it one of the biggest foren policy blunders since vietnam. chuck hagel was part of the planning for the afghanistan surge under president obama. he consulted with the president's national security adviser and when he gave a speech shortly after that surge was announced didn't have much criticism for president obama, said he was approaching the situation very carefully. so that suggests that his position may be a lot more aligned with president obama on afghanistan than it was during the later years of president bush. >> yeah. president karzai, meeting him, he wants u.s. security personnel to stick around after 2014, that's going happen, but he's highly
with republicans over his choice to head up the defense department. former republican senator, chuck haggle hagel of nebraska. he questioned israel and his unwillingness to back sanctions. listen to lindsey graham yesterday at the state you of the union. >> this is an in your face nomination by the president to all of us who are supportive of israel. i don't know what his management experience is regarding the pentagon, little if any. i think it's an incredibly controversial choice and it looks like the second term of barack obama is going to be an in your face term. >> foreign affairs correspondent jill dougherty is live from washington this morning. good morning to you. >> good morning. >> opposition to hagel comes from the right and left. can you break down the issues? >> yeah. i think it has to really start with israel because the people who believe that he is not a supporter of israel, in fact, they would question his devotion to anything that would help israel. he, for instance, believes in talking to hamas. he also has come out against iran sanctions by the united states. and so that gets
of people, new c.i.a. guy, brennan and hagel to be his defense secretary. we've talked in the past a little bit about brennan's problems. it's very clear that hagel could actually be the most divisive nomination fight in the senate since, what was it, 20 years ago when president george herbert walker bush nominated tower for defense secretary. >>brian: he didn't get it. >>steve: he absolutely did not get it. the conventional wisdom is hagel will probably sail through eventually. he won't get borked. but why did the president pick this guy when he could picked somebody like michelle flourney who would be the first female secretary of defense who everybody likes a lot. >>gretchen: who is that? >>brian: she's been in the pentagon. >>gretchen: i never heard her name as an option. for me, there's two reasons why this will not be a problem for chuck hagel in the long run. first of all, are the american people paying attention to this? i mean, i think if you could get the american people involved and they start representatives and say i have a problem with this or i light chuck hagel, then it beco
hey, look a little bit more, they found the cyanide in his body. >>> chuck hagel firing back at critics who question his support for israel. in his first interview since the president nominated him to be defense secretary, the former nebraska senator told a lincoln newspaper his record is being distorted and an accurate assessment will reveal unequivocal total support for israel. >>> and in the next hour of "early start," we'll be joined by peter beinart, correspondent for "newsweek" and the daily beast about the implications of hagel's nomination. >> a fascinating talk. >>> james holmes is expected in court today again in colorado. a police officer testified that holmes was, quote, very, very relaxed. the preliminary hearing will determine if holmes will stand trial in this case. 12 people were killed in the shooting and, of course, dozens and dozens were wounded. >>> and bells will be ringing across tucson today marking two years since the shooting that killed six and severely wounded congresswoman gabrielle giffords. giffords and her husband, mark kelly, also announcing a
a fascinating story regarding charles schumer. it seems that chuck schumer is the key to chuck hagel's failure or success. tell us why. >> that's right. and first we have to do happy friday. >> happy friday. >> happy friday. >> boy, do we need that. >> and this is a surprise. senator schumer has been telling his allies in new york, especially jewish groups, that would be, quote, very hard, very hard for him to support chuck hagel for pentagon head because of his positions on israel the other day. the real canary in the coal mine on the trouble that the hagel nomination has faced was on "meet the press" several weaks ago when senator schumer surprisingly wouldn't commit to supporting him. and usually when the president has a nominee, favorite nominee, a name out there, the number three democrat in the senate, chuck schumer, is going to say sure, i'll support him. he said he's going to listen for the hearings. and that's where he still is. just wednesday at a private breakfast at park avenue winter, one of those fancy restaurants up there, senator schumer was saying that he was very uneasy about
president, senate, congress, whatever. [ applause ] the president nominated chuck hagel to be the next secretary of defense. the pick has faced a lot of criticism because of hagel's controversial comments about israel and iran in the past. one of the people speaking out is former mayor ed koch and he said quote quote. frankly i thought there would come a time when he would renege speaking of the president when he conveyed on his support of israel comes a little earlier than i thought it would. it's very disappointing. i believe he will ultimately regret it koch said and it undoubt ltedly will reduce support for him in the jewish community. i don't think he, the president, worries about that now that the election is over thank you may for candor. we should be concerned about this appointment because of chuck hagel's soft attitude toward iran believing we shouldn't apply sanctions we should have unconditional conversations with these terrorists and somehow if we make nice with them they won't build a bomb and point it at everybody but themselves. at the same time, while we are going soft
battle, some will be bruising, none more so than the president's pick for defense secretary, chuck hagel. those hearings could start as early as this week we're told by senate sources and the white house mounted a vigorous defense and hagel says his record on israel, iran and gays in the military has been distorted and the senate armed services committee, kelly ayotte says what worries her most is the reaction from iran. >> what i want to make sure is that iran is actually not hopeful, but they're fearful, as r ult of our nominee from the secretary of perspective. >> former chairman of joint chiefs and secretary of state colin powell gave his backing to hagel today then though then senator hagel was one of the largest critics of the iraq war, a war that powell helped sell to the american people. and hagel later tried to stop the surge in iraq, calling it the biggest foreign policy blunder since vietnam. >> superbly qualified based on his overall record, based on his service to the country, based on how he feels about troops and veterans and families. >> reporter: the president is gearin
of defense is chuck hagel. some have questioned his commitment. >> this is an in-your-face nomination by the president. >> it's difficult to imagine the circumstances in which i would support his nomination. >> reporter: besides the fight over his cabinet nominees, the president must deal with the country's fiscal mess. by tend of february, the treasury will lose the able to boar moe more money and automatic spending cuts kick in on march 1st. >> we're going to be talking about further deficit reduction. >> reporter: the president has also promised to take swift action against gun violence. vice president biden is heading up a task force. the group is considering universal background checks for all gun buyers. and stiff penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors. >> that's way -- way in extreme of what is necessary. it's not going to pass. >> reporter: and that reaction is from a democrat, so whatever president obama proposes will likely face major battle over gun control. >> tahman bradley in washington. thank you so much. >>> well, billions of dollars in flood

iranian official says he hopes chuck hagel will help make practical changes in american foreign policy. some of his fellow republicans say they cannot and will not support hagel because of his record on israel and iran. he once made a comment about the quote jewish lobby and some of the, quote, dumb things they do. but later went on to say he supports israel in every way in the same conversation. at any rate now tells nebraska newspaper critics have completely distorted his record. he has shown unequivocal support for israel and called iran a sponsor of terrorism many times. first, there was a fire on one plane. now a fuel leak on another. the aircraft maker boeing dealing with a pair of problems on newest passenger jet the dream liner. what's up here? we will get a report next. plus a guy wins a million bucks in the lottery. the next day he is dead. investigators at the time said natural causes. they are digging up the body now to try to figure out who poisoned him. that and the rest of the night's journalists on this fox news tuesday fox report. it's the little things in life that ma

cabinet, his picks through john kerry, jack lew, chuck hagel. they're all white guys. is the nation's first black president going to find some women or some minorities to join him? >> you know, when this conversation first started to percolate, i thought it was from the onion because it just didn't seem serious to me that we're really questioning whether or not president obama is an advocate of diversity. but i see now that it's not the onion, that it's actually real and we're actually having this conversation. i personally just think it's ridiculous. especially when you consider what i think is the most important appointments -- appointment a president can make and that's to the supreme court because long after this administration is gone, those supreme court justices are going to be there shaping the laws of this country. and who did president obama pick? not one but two women. long after he's gone out of the white house those two women, those two appointees will be there. so this conversation about the president not being in support of diversity, the same person who pushed forwar
